Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. is a Japanese psychedelic rock and noise band, and their performance was certainly one of the wackiest things I've seen in a while! Led by the guitarist Kawabata Makoto, the band has seen many different offshoots over the years, with the Acid Mothers Temple collective having over 30 different members! The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. group was made up of Kawabata Makoto on the guitar, Higashi Hiroshi on the synthesizer and theremin, Jyonson Tsu on vocals and the guitar, Satoshima Nani on the drums, and 'Wolf' on the bass guitar.
The performance started off with some technical difficulties, as Hiroshi couldn't get his synthesizer working. Once everything was working and they were about to start their performance, Makoto threw his microphone onto the ground, and looked to the audience and said 'You don't want to make me angry!'. Everyone laughed and cheered, it was a very quirky moment. The band began to play, and their first few tracks almost seemed improvisational in nature, as the band just seemed to be testing everything out and jamming. I must say, the band was incredibly loud, and this was made worse as I was right next to the speaker and without earplugs (what a silly mistake!).
Once the band had settled in though, they were at their best. Hiroshi was captivating on his synthesizer and theremin, he looked like a heavenly psychedelic wizard as the rainbow lights streamed through his hair and beard. Nani was a highlight on the drums, and throughout the set he had numerous solos which blew me away! Wolf's guitar strings snapped about 15 minutes into the performance, so it took him about 10 minutes to get it working again, but the band continued to jam throughout the hiccup. Tsu's vocals would come in intermittently throughout the set, and they were haunting The band was only scheduled to perform for about 45 mins, but they actually extended their set to be about an hour and 20 minutes so that was awesome!
I must say, the Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. certainly lived up to their name, as their performance was out of this world! Their set was a spacey psychedelic wonderland, and each member was distinct and talented. I'll definitely be following this band in the future, to see what kind of weird stuff they come up with next!
